This question comes through email by Dede:
I have a favorite pair of eyeglasses that has a cracked stem. How would I
make a mold and a replacement in red resin. Thanks so much for your help. I so enjoy your interesting projects. I
especially enjoyed the info on color theory. -

Hi Dede,
The first thing youre going to have to do is get a model to make a mold from. Hopefully, your cracked stem isnt beyond a temporary repair. If you can bring it back together with super glue (or something similar) and without any missing pieces, it should last long enough to serve as your model. If youre missing any parts or need to fill in any rough spots, you will need to smooth it out or fill in the holes with wax.
Once you have your model, you will then need to make a silicone mold with it. Any of our Alumilite silicone kits (not the putty) would work well. https://www.resinobsession.com/Silicone.html If your piece lies flat, you can then make a simple mold with just one pour as shown in the video on this page: https://www.resinobsession.com/ItemPage/5324/Alumilite-Silicone-Mold-Making-Rubber-2.html If your piece has any curve to it at all, youre going to have to make a two part mold, which is much more complicated. Smooth on has a good video on two part mold making here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ1A7ZjTsx8
Once you have your mold, you can then cast with resin. Since this is going to be something functional, I would suggest using a polyurethane resin, which is more durable than epoxy resin.
Good luck!

Hi I’m trying to make a pair of doll sunglasses using your mold kits, first I used the putty one and poured in resin, the resin is still bendy, I saw this article saying I should use the aluminite, I did that first, lol, however I covered the whole model and couldn’t get it out, yes I’m new! So how should I do this? Make s mold box but it’s not a completely flat item. Suggestions?? Help!! I ave photos

Hi Nancy,
You will need to make a two part mold. This video shows an example using a plastic toy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtxgSLUYwIg I would put lay your template down into the clay such that the eye pieces are next to the clay and the ear pieces are sticking up.
