Hey everyone, I’ve been trying to learn ukulele for a few weeks now, and I’m really enjoying it, but I keep wondering… do I really need to learn music theory to get good? I can play a few songs just by following tabs, but sometimes I feel lost when a chord changes or I try to improvise a little. I’m not planning to become a pro, I just want to play for fun, so I’m not sure if all the theory stuff is necessary or just extra stress.

Honestly, you can get pretty far just by learning chords and practicing songs. I started without knowing any theory, and just played along with tabs. I loved practicing somewhere only we know chords; it’s simple but sounds amazing, and going through it helped me get comfortable switching chords smoothly. Later, I picked up a bit of theory, and it made improvising easier, but it’s definitely not required to have fun or play songs you love.
