I was recently given these rather large and ornate bronze art nouveau torchiere lamps which were originally in a funeral home that was redecorated (they’re not originals but they are excellent reproductions). The lamp shades are large round (18 inch diameter) frosted glass with a burnt umberish overspray to diffuse the light and Lord are they ugly and boring – but I suppose bright and festive lampshades are out of place in funeral homes! I am an artist also but not of this flavor … drawing and painting mostly. I’ve tried using acrylic paints and while they went on well, it ended up looking like a cheap plastic lampshade so I stripped it back to frosted glass. I’ve tried using alcohol dye inks and while I really liked the stained glass look, the curvature of the glass made it impossible to apply evenly and the backlight from the lamp really highlighted the color beautifully but also the unevenness which made it look streaky. I poured some alcohol over it and I’m back to plain frosted glass. Having suffered an accident and a lot of subsequent neck surgery, I can no longer spend hours doing small detained worked.
I’ve watched many videos on tinting and pouring resins and it looks like something I could but to say that I’m a complete amateur at this would be an understatement. Any suggestions would be most appreciated … even just a richly colored single translucent coating would do the trick though I do prefer multiple colors. Because of the backlighting, I’d rather avoid using brushes which makes this pouring technique rather appealing. PLEASE, I’d be grateful for any suggestions on how a total amateur could successfully go about this. Thank you so very much.
