GuestTried to make a resin cutting board with glossy photos printed from the local CVS – sprayed them with Mod Podge® Ultra Gloss All-In-One Glue & Sealer Spray and spread with a foam brush, let sit for 12 hours. Put them in the resin and within less than half an hour, the colors faded and when I used a silicone stick to move glitter off the photos, the ink on the photos streaked off. The piece is ruined. What did I do wrong?

KeymasterHi Suzanne,
I’ve never used that spray-on gloss product, and I’ve never used photos printed on photo paper. I’m not sure what happened.
I always print my photos onto bright white paper with a color laserjet printer. The dot matrix printing always smears for me when applying glue. Maybe something similar happened here.
As for glue, I use a brush-on one like this: https://shop.resinobsession.com/products/mod-podge-water-based-glue-sealant-for-resin-items

GuestAdhesives and sealants can interact with ink, especially if you use too much and don’t let the photo dry long enough. Next time, try using materials that are more resistant to adhesives and resins.

GuestMost likely, the problem is with the printing. CVS photos are usually printed with water-soluble inks, which can smear when in contact with glue, sealant or resin. Even if they look dry, the ink can “bleed” due to a reaction with liquid materials. Try using round labels instead of regular photos. They transfer the image to the heat-sealed surface, and the colors will remain vibrant even under the resin.
