Hi

Please can you help me. I have the following project to set an object in resin as if floating. The resin will be set in a glass bowl and will take about 4.5kg of resin.

I have tried various different types but have settled on Polyester due to the size. I have tried pouring in different layers as well as one go but am having problems.

Can you please assist me with any advice – in an ideal world to pour in one go would be great as I do not want to have any joins.

I have had problems with the resin overheating and then cracking and discolouring.

Any help for such a big casting would be very much welcomed and appreciated.

Hi Richard,

Polyester resin can be a bit challenging to cast.  The amount of hardener needed to cure the resin is dependent on the thickness of the cast.  If your casting is thick, I can imagine that it will create a lot of heat if you try to do it in one pour.  Polyester resin can also be brittle, especially if you use more hardener than necessary.

As much as you dont want to do it, Im afraid you are going to have to do your casting in multiple layers to get the best results.
