Hey all! I’ve got a problem. I’ve got this old wallpaper in my kitchen, and I really want to paint over it. Has anyone tried doing this before? I’m not sure if it’s even possible without it peeling off or looking weird. Any advice would be super helpful!

Hey @paint_pro101! I’ve done this a couple of times, and it can definitely be done, but it’s all about prep work. First, make sure the wallpaper is securely attached to the wall—if it’s peeling, you’ll need to fix that first. Then, lightly sand the surface to make it less glossy and more “paintable.” You might also need to apply a wallpaper primer to help with adhesion. After that, you can just go ahead and paint. It’s like any regular wall—just more layers involved!

I agree with @renovation_queen. Just make sure you’ve cleaned the wallpaper first, especially if it’s old. You don’t want grease or dust interfering with the paint. Also, if your wallpaper has any texture, it might show through the paint, so you could end up with a bit of a bumpy finish. If you’re really unsure, you could try testing it in a small corner before committing to the whole room.

@fixerupper_guy, good point about the texture! I hadn’t even thought about that. I’m really hoping it turns out smooth. How do you feel about using oil-based paint for this? I’ve heard it sticks better to wallpaper, but I’m a little concerned about the smell and the cleanup.

I usually go for water-based paint because it’s easier to work with and clean up afterward. I think oil-based would definitely stick better, but the fumes are pretty harsh, and the cleanup isn’t fun. Plus, water-based paints have come a long way, and they give you that smooth finish if you do your prep right. I say test with water-based first and see if you’re happy with the result.

Yeah, I would second @renovation_queen’s advice. Oil-based paint can be a bit of a hassle, especially in smaller rooms like kitchens. Water-based paints also dry faster, which is nice if you’re on a tight schedule. If you need help with the right type of primer or anything else, I found this article that covers the best primers for painting over wallpaper: How to Paint Over Wallpaper https://www.bhg.com/home-improvement/painting/how-to-paint-over-wallpaper/.

It’s got some good step-by-step advice.

Thanks so much for the tips, guys! I think I’ll try the water-based option first and see how it goes. Also, I just remembered that I might need some professional help with the wallpaper removal (if that becomes necessary). Do you know any good wallpaper installers in the area, just in case? I’m in Philadelphia, so if anyone has recommendations, I’d really appreciate it!

@paint_pro101, if you do end up needing help with the wallpaper removal later on, I’ve heard good things about these guys wallpaper installers in Philadelphia https://bestwallpaperinstaller.com/locations/wallpaper-installer-philadelphia/.

They do both installation and removal, so they could be useful if you want to start fresh with no hassle.

@renovation_queen, that’s a solid recommendation! I actually know a few people who’ve used them for installations, and they were pretty happy with the work. Hopefully, it won’t come to that, though, and your painting project goes smoothly, @paint_pro101!
