An i/o device error normally occurs when the system fails to read or write in your storage device. This may occur because of defective cables, a broken USB port, bad sectors on the disk, outdated drivers or wrong settings of the transfer mode. An i/o device error would make the system realise that communication between the hardware and the computer is not working and thus you would not be able to open files or open the drive normally.
