Hello all I was wondering if the community can point me in the correct direction.
I would like to cast a rose that I have my wife for our first date 12 years ago. The volume required would be a cylinder 3 inches in diameter and 17 inches tall. The concept seems straight forward but I needed some help with the specifics.
What is the best resin: polyester or epoxy and what will allow me to do this much volume?
Can I use a PVC pipe as a mold or do I need to make a silicone mold?
If I need to make a cylindrical silicone mold what is the best way to go about this?

      Thank you in advance
      Lenny

      Hi Lenny,

A polyester resin is what I would do in this case, but it’s not something I recommend for beginners. Do you have experience with resin?

Unfortunately, resin (epoxy or polyester) is going to adhere to PVC pipe. You will either need a silicone mold the cylinder shape or somehow make your own.

This might be a good option for you — how about casting the resin into a clear plastic tubing with the rose? It would be the same idea, albeit on a larger scale, as the concept I show about using tubing to make beads in this article: https://www.resinobsession.com/resin-tutorials/how-to-make-your-own-resin-beads

I have not casted anything before. I watched some videos on the polyester casting stuff doesnt seem to difficult. What about a polyurethane resin?
        Thank you for your help

That could work as well although sometimes they don’t release bubbles as easily. For a large casting like this, I would expect you to need to use a pressure pot to have the final casting be bubble free.
