I would like to create a gear shift knob for my jeep that resembles the mosquito in amber from the movie Jurassic Park. My thoughts so far is that it would be either spherical or near egg shaped, with a black base to hide the steel nut that would have to be embedded. Because of the constant use, it needs to be strong and polished, not a gloss coating, so I was thinking polyester.I have a good idea how to make the bug work (do a half pour and let the bug stick to the surface), its the mold, the color, if it will be strong enough, and any other things that haven’t occurred to me. Thanks

A polyester or polyurethane resin should work for this.

Now Im thinking, instead of a black base, a creamed honey color would be a better choice

Thanks Kathrine, would one be better than the other? And what should I start looking for in a mold?

You are in a tough spot. The polyester would be nice because you can embed the mosquito and pour subsequent layers to minimize the lines between layers, but the surface exposed to air will stay sticky. You don’t have to worry about the stickiness with polyurethane, but likely have to use a pressure pot.

Since I have never seen a ‘gear shift’ mold, you should plan on making your own.

Which resin is polyester, and do you have amber coloring for it?

and what mold release would I use?
