different resins

Have you ever wondered if you could mix and match resin? In most cases the answer is no, but we’re going to show you a fun technique where you can actually use 2 different resins in the same project!

If you’re already a resin crafter, you know how versatile resin is for just about any project you can dream up. If you’re a new resin crafter, this is a fun way to experiment with different types of resins and see the different finishes they can give. For this project, I used Alumilite’s Amazing Clear Cast and Amazing Casting Resin. When it comes to standout resins, these are 2 of my faves. Amazing Clear Cast is super clear, durable, and has a high shine finish. Amazing Casting Resin cures white, is also very durable and cures in around 10 minutes. Let’s learn how you can use these 2 totally different resins to make these stunning glass/milk glass looking jars.

Understanding the Different Resins

Amazing Clear Cast is an epoxy resin known for its exceptional clarity and ease of use. It’s perfect for projects where you want a transparent finish, such as encapsulating objects, making jewelry, coasters, or other small crafts. Its self-leveling properties and UV resistance make it a go-to choice for both beginners and seasoned resin crafters.

Amazing Casting Resin is a polyurethane resin known for its quick curing time and white finish. It’s ideal for creating models, prototypes, or any project that benefits from a speedy cure time (like around 10 minutes!) This resin can be painted, dyed, or drilled allowing for a wide range of finished looks and project applications.

Project Idea: Customized Resin Jars

A great project to start with, which showcases the properties of both resins, is making a set of customized resin jars. This project allows for creativity in design, choice of inclusions (like colorants or glitter), and can be a beautiful addition to your home decor or a personalized gift.

Materials Needed:

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Preparation: Ensure your work area is clean, dry, and well-ventilated. Wear your safety gear to protect your skin and eyes.
  2. Mix Your Resin: Follow the instructions for your chosen resin. For Amazing Clear Cast, you’ll typically mix equal parts resin and hardener. For Amazing Casting Resin, you’ll also mix equal parts, but be mindful of its faster curing time.
  3. Pour the First Layer: Fill around half of your jar with Amazing Clear Cast into your molds. Allow it to partially cure.
  4. Added Colorants: Once you’ve poured your first layer of Amazing Clear Cast, I added some alcohol ink and gently stirred to incorporate some of it into that first layer, but also leave some in the areas of the mold that don’t have resin yet.
  5. Pour the Final Layer: Mix a batch of casting resin and carefully pour it over your first layer.
  6. Cure: Allow your jars to cure as per the resin instructions — Amazing Clear Cast typically requires 24-48 hours to fully cure, while Amazing Casting Resin will be set in about 15-30 minutes but may benefit from a few hours to fully harden.
  7. Demold and Finish: Once cured, gently remove from the molds.

Pro Tips:

  • Bubble Removal: Use a heat gun or a torch lightly over the surface to remove bubbles after pouring Amazing Clear Cast. Do not use a heat fun with casting resin.
  • Curing Time: Be patient and allow your resin to cure fully for the best results.
  • Creativity is Key: Experiment with different colors, inclusions, and designs to create unique pieces.

  1. I like your site, emails, etc but I really hate it when sites show you very cool things and don’t carry the molds for it or cite the resource.I don’t think I’m the only one.
