This question comes through email by Christy:

      Hello,
I would like to make a medium to large size dish/bowl, similar to an old-fashioned candy jar, but more open mouthed.  Or, perhaps a bowl of some sort, but in a unique shape (like a dog?s head).  Which mold making kit would be best?  And, would you suggest making a one piece or two piece mold? 5 would be using Easy Cast or something similar.

      Thanks for your time!

      Hi Christy,

It’s a little hard to say without seeing exactly what you’re going to make.  I can tell you that if you’re going to make a 2 piece mold, the Alumilite Silicone #2 would be choice, whereas the Alumilite Silicone #3 would be my choice for a 1 piece mold. You can find them both in our store here:

I don’t know that you need to make a two piece mold, but it may make it easier to cast.  (As a warning too, your mold will be heavy, especially if the bowl/jar is of any size.)

EasyCast resin would not be my first choice for this project since it’s a doming resin, not a casting resin. It’s going to mix thick and make it harder for bubbles to escape. Instead, I would use the Resin Obsession super clear resin. It mixes in a thin viscosity, making bubbles easier to release. You can find it in several sizes in our store here:

You want to make sure you are using a resin that will easily release bubbles since you wont be able to see them easily to remove them.
