This question comes through email by Kristi:
Hi,
I have a bunch of agate slabs of various sizes and I want to set them in resin so that there is about a 1/4″ border all the way around it. I will then drill holes all the way around about 1/4″ apart. I have not used resin before and was hoping that you could give me a little bit of help. What do I use for a mold? Like I said, they are all different sizes, so one or two standard molds wont be enough. Do you carry a product that would work for me or know of a DIY solution? Also, how would you recommend accomplishing what I need to do? Should I pour some resin into the mold and then press the agate down into it, or should I pour it over the whole slab? Since resin isnt exactly cheap, I would like to use as little as possible while still having a quality product. Thanks for any help that you can give me. -

Kristi,The easiest way for you to get these in resin is to use a premade mold. I dont know how big your slabs are but paperweight molds might be your best bet

If you want to have a mold that follows the shape of the slab, then you will need to make your own out of silicone using a template that is larger than the slab (allowing you the room to drill)
You will want to pour the resin in first, then add your slab. Put it in on an angle, then move it to where you want to go. This will help you avoid trapping air. I show the technique using a sticker in this resin charm video:
Do you have a small piece you can experiment with? That would be my overall suggestion. Resin can be a bit tricky, especially if you have never worked with it before.

I’m planning to top my patio (about 180 sq. ft.) with agate, jasper and obsidian slabs (about 1cm thick) and then pour resin on and around them to set them permanently. Each piece would average about 10-15 square inches (50-100 square centimeters). I have several questions:
1. What type of resin to use for a clear (or relatively clear) finish?
2. The material would need to be durable because it’s for an outside application.
3. I may need to do small portions at a time to insure the resin doesn’t set up before I’m done arranging the agate slabs.
4. Would I need to have a clear top-coat as well?
Thanks,

Hi Kevin,
For your purposes, I recommend a flooring epoxy. Unfortunately, we don’t sell those so I’m afraid I don’t have any advice to help you with your project.
